Flash appeared to be heading home, with the women close behind, but never made it back, according to Soares. Searches by foot, by horse and even by airplane failed to find Flash. Lee hadn't heard the reports of a missing horse in the forest and because Flash was still wearing riding gear, "I thought maybe it threw a rider and was just running. ... I called 911 and got in touch with Freetown police."

But "there's no way anybody was going to find me," he said.
