ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. - A recent incident in Pasco County has raised concern among horse owners after a property owner reported an attempted attack on her animals by unknown individuals.
According to the owner, Brena Kramer, three people entered her property through a side access point over the weekend. She believes they intended to harm her horses for meat. The situation escalated quickly but was interrupted when her two Rottweilers confronted the intruders, forcing them to leave the property. The dogs sustained minor injuries during the encounter.
Several of Kramer’s horses were found injured following the incident. Reported injuries included cuts near the eyes, rope abrasions around the mouth area, and one horse discovered with a rope still secured around its neck, suggesting an attempted restraint.
Incidents like this are not isolated. Debi Metcalfe, founder and president of Stolen Horse International (NetPosse), says similar cases have surfaced across multiple regions in Florida over the years.
“This type of crime has been happening for a long time, and it does not appear to be slowing down,” Metcalfe explained. “We’ve seen reports from counties such as Manatee, Sumter, and Marion, and unfortunately the pattern continues.”
Metcalfe noted that earlier investigations into missing horses revealed that some had been killed after being taken. In response, warnings were issued to horse owners across the state, but concerns remain ongoing.
Local authorities are currently reviewing the Pasco County incident.
Metcalfe emphasized the need for awareness and responsiveness, stating that these crimes should be taken seriously to help prevent future harm.
Horse owners are encouraged to strengthen property security, monitor their animals closely, and report any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
