Pony Club Loses Float and Tack in Theft

We keep telling you and telling you. Boot those trailer wheels, keep them where somebody has an eye on them, and know those VIN numbers. Now those who go the fiberglass/composite route won't be as likely to be hit-true. Let's face a cold, hard economic fact-those trailers are metal. Scrap dealers are paying top dollars for high grade steel and aluminum. 

We know, for example, that one person who reported her trailer missing to us eventually found out its fate-when the police raided a "chop shop" scrap metal dealer. All she got back was the VIN plate. That's correct-just the VIN plate. Her trailer had been chopped up and sold for scrap by a man and his son. The man has since died, but the court has sentenced the son to a year in jail, paying $164,000 in restitution with the stipulation that if he doesn't, he'll have to do 4-6 years more jail time. That was in Graham, NC. (Report N000182)

In the Williamstown, Australia case, somebody apparently thought a chain between the trailer and concrete blocks was an effective deterrent. (Thieves don't know about bolt cutters?) It was parked inside of a fence-which was cut twice to gain entry and then to leave with the trailer and saddles. (Probably that bolt cutter again.)
