A Tennessee horse owner has been reunited with a stolen horse following an investigation by the Tennessee Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Crime Unit and local law enforcement. Authorities say the case began after two horses were reported missing from a property in Monroe County, Tennessee in June 2026.

According to investigators, one of the missing horses, an Appaloosa valued at approximately $5,000, was allegedly taken from the property, advertised for sale online, and sold to a buyer in Northeast Tennessee. The investigation ultimately led authorities to the horse's location.

Working alongside a detective from the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, members of the Tennessee Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Crime Unit recovered the horse and safely returned it to its owner. Investigators also recovered the funds used in the sale and returned the money to the purchaser.

As a result of the investigation, warrants were obtained for Shaleah Leann Peels and Kyleigh Marie Shell, both of Monroe County. Authorities reported that the women turned themselves in and were charged with theft of property over $5,000 and attempted theft.

Livestock theft remains a significant concern for horse owners and agricultural producers. Cases involving horses can be especially challenging because animals may be transported and sold quickly through online marketplaces and private transactions. The successful recovery of this horse demonstrates the importance of prompt reporting, coordinated investigations, and public awareness when livestock disappear.

The case also holds special meaning for Debi Metcalfe, founder of Stolen Horse International. More than 25 years ago, retired Tennessee Department of Agriculture investigator Don Moody played a key role in helping recover Debi's stolen horse, Idaho, who was returned home in 1998. This Tennessee investigation reminds us of the commitment livestock investigators and law enforcement officers bring to these cases, and the difference their work makes for horse owners.

Stolen Horse International congratulates the Tennessee Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Crime Unit, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, and all investigators involved for their diligence and professionalism in bringing this case to a successful resolution. Their efforts not only resulted in the safe recovery of the horse but also helped protect an unsuspecting buyer from further financial loss.

We are always encouraged to see livestock theft cases thoroughly investigated and resolved. Every recovered horse represents a family made whole again, and every successful investigation sends a message that horse theft and livestock theft will not be ignored.
