Monday 25th Jun, 2012 - Horse theft happens in a variety of ways everywhere, even New Zeland.

A Kawerau practice of taking horses for night time joy rides is exposed after an alleged horse thief was hit by a car on Saturday night.

The Kawerau man was taken to Whakatane Hospital with broken ribs and a possible broken arm after being struck by a car while allegedly stealing horses from an Eastern Bay of Plenty property.

According to an unnamed man, “There has been a bit of a problem in Kawerau in general. They have been taking a few over the last couple of months.

“They take them for joy rides and we get them back.”
