Palestine TX man arrested in connection with horse theft investigation

FORT WORTH, Texas — A young East Texas man has been arrested following an investigation into the alleged theft of horses from a North Texas livestock auction, according to the Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association.

Authorities say the investigation began earlier this year after four horses sold through an online livestock auction were released to a buyer but not fully paid for. The seller later reported the transaction to law enforcement after payment for the horses was disputed and ultimately reversed, the association said.

The suspect, a Palestine resident, was taken into custody April 9 in Anderson County on a warrant issued out of Montague County. He faces a third-degree felony charge of theft of livestock, which carries significant penalties under Texas law due to the value and agricultural importance of horses and other livestock.

According to information provided by the TSCRA, investigators determined the buyer had completed the initial purchase electronically, arranged for the horses to be picked up from the auction facility, and later contested the charges with the payment service used for the transaction. Investigators reviewed digital records, financial transaction data and witness statements before presenting the case to prosecutors.

Regional media outlets reported that bond was later posted and the suspect has since been released while awaiting further court proceedings. The case remains under review by the Montague County District Attorney’s Office.

The Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association credited cooperation among local prosecutors, sheriff’s offices and state game wardens for assisting with the investigation and arrest. The organization has long maintained a livestock theft prevention program aimed at protecting ranchers, horse owners and livestock markets across Texas and the Southwest.

Advocacy response

Stolen Horse International, a nonprofit organization focused on equine theft awareness and recovery, highlighted the arrest as an important step in addressing livestock crime.

The organization said it is grateful to see another alleged equine thief identified and arrested and offered public kudos to the TSCRA and its partners for their work in protecting horses and holding suspects accountable.

Equine theft, advocates note, often involves complex transactions, online sales and interstate movement of animals, making cooperation between industry groups and law enforcement especially critical.
