Horses Stabbed at KCK Ranch

Horses Stabbed at KCK Ranch

17 March 2011

March 16, 2011- KANSAS CITY, KAN Police in Kansas City, Kansas, are investigating after someone stabbed two horses at a ranch overnight.

According to the owners of the Deu West Ranch, which sits on 80 acres near 120th and Donohoo Avenue, when ranch hands reported to work on Wednesday morning they found 32 horses out of their stalls and running wild. Two of the horses had stab wounds to the neck.

"I'm angry and upset," said owner Bill Basler, who says that it took almost an hour to round up the horses. "I live here, and somebody came in here in the mmiddle of the night."

Basler says that the stabbed horses are in stable condition, and on anti-biotics to prevent infection.

"One cut was an inch and a quarter, which got almost to the spine of one horse," said Basler. "The other went more down and hit more fat, and also hit a vein so it bled out a little more."

Officer Brittany Pruitt of the Kansas City Kansas Police Department says that it's an unusual case for detectives.

"It's not something we usually get called out on, and it's in a quite neghborhood, but they are trying to investigate who might have come on the property and caused harm to those horses," said Pruitt.

Basler says that he doesn't know who stabbed the horses, but says that whoever did it knows their way around his ranch. He says that he hopes the incident won't cause his customers to pull their animals off his ranch.

"My son heard the dogs barking and then the dogs shutup right away," said Basler. "The only way the dogs will shutup is if you know their names and you tell them to shutup."

Police are asking anyone with information in the case to call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-TIPS.
