A Sweet Victory That Still Inspires: Candy’s Journey, 25 Years Later
Few stories capture the heart and mission of Stolen Horse International/NetPosse like the unforgettable recovery of Candy, a beloved Quarter Horse mare stolen from a Houston‑area farm in April 2003. Her case remains one of the organization’s most cherished recoveries, not only for the dramatic 64‑week search that ended in triumph, but for the deep and enduring friendship formed between Candy’s owner, Cheryl Ann Zamisch, and founder Debi Metcalfe.
A Flyer, a Community, and a Miracle in Motion
On April 17, 2003, Candy disappeared, launching Cheryl into every horse owner’s worst nightmare. She searched tirelessly, supported by the expanding network of Stolen Horse International/NetPosse and the reach of its NetPosse Alerts. After nearly 63–64 weeks, a breakthrough occurred: a woman who unknowingly owned Candy was handed a NetPosse flyer and recognized her immediately. That single flyer set the recovery in motion. Chery says, "On April 16, 2003, my precious 'Candy' was stolen from Houston, Tx, and missing for 64 weeks! I learned a lot about TRUSTING in The Lord, and I am so thankful to everyone, especially Debi Bailey Metcalfe with Stolen Horse International / NetPosse! Whoever posted the NetPosse flyer in the feed store in Humble, Texas, I am so grateful, and to Sandi West, for calling me, saying she had my horse and just wanted to give her back!"
After Candy came home, Cheryl followed Debi’s heartfelt advice to safeguard her mare’s future by having Candy freeze‑branded with a double‑heart brand. The mark wasn’t just a symbol of protection—it was a reflection of the deep love Cheryl carries for Candy and a reminder of the long road that brought her back. The double hearts became both a permanent identifier and a tribute to their unbreakable bond.
A Friendship That Has Lasted for Decades
Throughout the long search, Cheryl received unwavering support from Debi Metcalfe, who understood her anguish after living through the theft and recovery of her own mare, Idaho. Their connection forged during crisis has lasted more than two decades, with Cheryl remaining one of Stolen Horse International/NetPosse’s strongest supporters. Their friendship is a true testament to how deeply this organization touches lives. [netposse.com]
Debi shared a short, heartfelt reflection on Candy’s impact:
“After nearly 29 years of helping recover stolen horses, some stories stay with me forever—and Candy’s is one of them. From the moment her flyer helped identify her, I felt blessed to be part of her journey. Hearing from Cheryl year after year has been a gift, and Candy’s story still warms my heart. I so enjoy hearing about Candy, and that she is still doing well.”
Candy Today: Healthy, Loved, and Nearing 26
This week, Cheryl shared a joyful update following Candy’s annual veterinary exam. Candy is in very good shape, passed all her tests, and had no detectable murmur at the visit. She also celebrated a negative Coggins, and Cheryl expressed deep gratitude to God for the blessing of such a beautiful horse.
As Candy approaches her 26th birthday, Cheryl reflected on their long journey together. She said she cannot measure the love she has for Candy, acknowledging the scary moments, countless prayers, sweat, tears, and even broken bones that have been part of their story—but affirming that every bit of it has been worth it. She shared how her faith deepened during Candy’s 64‑week disappearance and recovery and expressed excitement about celebrating Candy’s upcoming birthday. With deep sincerity, she added her gratitude: Thank you, Lord, for your awesome horse!
