NetPosse normally does not process reports on horses purchased at auctions as “found” but this is a unique story.
Although we agreed to publish this report, please note that we have a lot of unanswered questions such as how do we know if the back story is true. A lot of things are not adding up to our seasoned volunteers, including why law enforcement wasn’t brought in to investigate rather than the horse being taken to auction by a third party.
Every state has Estray Livestock Laws in place that vary somewhat between jurisdictions. However, in our experience, all states require a found animal to be kept a certain number of days (by Law Enforcement or an authorized representative) and due diligence made to find the owner. From what we know of this story, none of this was done.
If anyone has more direct information (not something read on the Internet) of this back story, please contact us through the Web site so we can help piece this situation together.
Ultimately, we highly commend the person who bought this horse to save it from a bad situation and to grant time to find its rightful owner. If someone is searching for this horse, it is everyone’s hope that the owner can be reunited with this animal.
