UPSTATE, S.C. (NetPosse) — Authorities in South Carolina are investigating the suspected shooting of a horse that later had to be euthanized, a case that has drawn concern from the equine community and animal welfare advocates.

Law enforcement officials said the incident occurred in the Upstate region, where a horse was found with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound. The animal’s condition was so severe that it had to be put down, according to reports. [wyff4.com]

Details about when and where the shooting occurred have not been fully released, and investigators have not yet identified a suspect. The case remains active as authorities work to determine what happened and who may be responsible.

The incident underscores ongoing concerns about animal cruelty involving horses, particularly in rural areas where livestock may be vulnerable. While officials have not confirmed a motive, cases involving the intentional harm of horses often raise alarm among owners and communities due to the severity of the acts and the difficulty of preventing them.

Stolen Horse International, also known as NetPosse, said cases like this highlight the broader reality that its work extends beyond missing and stolen horses. The organization also assists in situations involving neglect, abuse and suspected cruelty when horses are harmed or placed in danger.

“These cases are heartbreaking,” the organization said in a statement. “Our mission is not only to help recover missing horses, but also to support owners and communities when horses are victims of violence or neglect.”

The group noted that incidents involving injured or killed horses can be especially traumatic for families, who often consider the animals part of their household.

“We are deeply sorry for the family and for the loss of this horse,” the statement said. “No owner should have to go through something like this.”

Animal welfare advocates say community awareness and prompt reporting are key factors in helping investigators solve cases like this. Authorities typically urge anyone with information about suspicious activity around pastures or farms to come forward.

The investigation into the South Carolina case remains ongoing, and officials have not released additional updates on potential leads or charges.
