PIERRE, S.D. Flilnt Dahl, a 23-year-old Fort Pierre man charged with the theft of Dually, [a barrel racing horse] has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors.
Dahl was charged with felony grand theft and misdemeanor inhumane treatment of an animal in the theft of Dually, a rodeo barrel-racing horse taken July 5 [2009] from the Stanley County Fairgrounds and later found injured. Other cases involve misdemeanor allegations of drug use, threats against a law officer and hit-and-run property damage.
Dahl pleaded guilty to inhumane treatment of an animal under a plea agreement with prosecutors that included misdemeanor charges from three other cases. He initially had also faced a felony grand theft charge in the Dually case.
Magistrate Judge Mark Smith ordered Dahl, to serve five days behind bars over the Fourth of July holiday each year.
Dahl has agreed to pay $25,000 in restitution to Dually's owner Wendy Halweg for injuries to the horse. Halweg, in return, agreed not to sue Dahl.
