Hayley Lewallen's horse trailer and thousands of dollars of equipment was stolen from the campus last week.
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A Middle Tennessee State University student is hoping thieves will return her horse trailer and tack that was recently stolen from campus.
Hayley Lewallen is a senior majoring in horse science at the local university.
She told Nashville's News 2 someone stole the trailer which was a gift from her father who has since passed away from cancer.
"They pulled in one night when they knew nobody would be here, busted through the lock that I had on the hitch, hooked it up and drove off with it," the college student explained.
Lewallen said the 2004 Longhorn horse trailer was filled with $15,000 to $20,000 worth of equipment and supplies, much of which was given to her by her late father.
"I actually had a Dale Martin Barrel Racing saddle that my dad had given to me as a Christmas present about three years before he passed away from cancer," she said.
In an attempt to retrieve her stolen trailer and equipment, Lewallen has posted flyers at various retailers.
"I have mailed out probably 150 flyers to different feed and tack stores around the area and I have hung up about 60 [flyers] by hand," she explained.
With her tack and trailer stolen, Lewallen said she will be unable to compete in upcoming racing competitions.
"It definitely puts a halt on the show season this year. I was qualified to go to Perry, Georgia for our championship show on Labor Day weekend, the last show was this coming Saturday to qualify, but it looks like I will not be making it to that," she said.
Despite missing the competitions, Lewallen said she is hopeful her stolen items will be returned and is offering a cash reward for the missing horse tack.
Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact campus police at 615-898-2424.
