Halloween night is full of ghosts and goblins — but the real fright for horse owners is a thief in the dark. While everyone is out trick-or-treating, horses, tack, and trailers left unguarded make an easy target. Here are seven simple things you can do before dark to keep everything you love safe tonight.
Keep your horses safe tonight:
• Bring your horses in before dark — don't leave them out overnight.
• Walk your fences, gates, and latches before dark and fix anything loose.
• Leave the barn and yard lights on — thieves love the dark.
• Lock your tack room and your trailer, and use a hitch lock.
• Don't leave saddles, halters, or valuables where they can be seen from the road.
• Make sure every horse has ID — a microchip registered in your name, plus current photos.
• If a horse goes missing, file a report at netposse.com right away — don't wait until morning.
