NetPosse Case Update on SEE HEART CHEX

It is with great sadness that we announce that Chex has been found deceased in a remote part of the French Creek Natural area in the Custer State Park after he went missing three years ago. We received this message from his owner on Sunday, April 3, 2022.

Stephanie Bushman, Chex's owner says, "When I have a chance I will write more or call you. March 31st. Custer Search and Rescue located Cee Heart Silver Chex in Custer State Park. His remains were down a 400 ft. Vertical drop. They believe he snapped his neck, so he didn't suffer. Jim and Carol managed to get down to him cut some mane, for me, and climb up. It took 6 hours. I am headed out to SD. end of May and will meet with Jim and Carol to take me to him. I know this is closure, but it hurts. Thank You for all you have done for me. Talk soon."

"It's funny, you want so much to hear from someone and when you finally do, it stops your heart. I think I went numb! I heard the guy talking but don't remember much of the conversation."

Back on Sept. 21, 2019, we assisted Custer Ambulance Service with a call in Custer State Park for some riders who had been thrown from their horses. Three spooked horses had run off; two were found within a day or two near the horse camp but the third horse, named Chex, was never located despite extensive searches in the days, weeks and months that followed by SAR volunteers as well as by his owner and friends and other riders who wanted to help.

The other day Conservation Officer Ron Tietsort received a tip from a lion hunter who on the last day of the season had discovered some bones in a very steep and remote part of French Creek Natural Area. Ron contacted two of our members who have been dedicated to this search the past three years. They went out yesterday, and after much difficulty on a six-hour hike, found the bones and remains which appear to be from Chex. We will never know exactly what happened but he may have fallen in a steep area not long after he disappeared.

Chex's owner has been notified and though very sad, expressed much gratitude for all the people who helped since Chex disappeared three years ago. We're so sorry this didn't come out another way.

Condolences to Stephanie

Please accept our condolences. Just know that we are here for you, and please do not hesitate to reach out, especially during this difficult time. Our deepest sympathies go out to you and your family. May God give you the comfort and peace that you seek and may the soul of your beloved Chex rest in peace.
