With the announcement that Horse Slaughter is again legal in the United States, NetPosse reminds horse owners that they need to be aware of the potential for theft ... it can happen to anyone. Horse theft knows no breed or discipline.
Rest assured, the owners of six horses stolen in Carter County, TN, the night of Sept. 13, 2011, surely never thought it would happen to them. Despite their distinctive paint markings, Little Man and Patches have not yet been found.
"Little Man" (pictured) is one of 6 horses reported stolen in Carter County, Tennessee, in Sept. 2011. His owner needs the public's help in recovering his horse. Another Paint mare, Patches, has not been recovered either, although "Three horses were recovered after being sold at auction in Catlettsburg, Kentucky by a woman."
Please share these links, print flyers and post in your community and ask friends to do the same. Let's bring Little Man and Patches home!

Be sure to have your horses marked with permanently ID to help prevent theft and to aid in the recovery should the worst happen. A freeze brand is a visible theft deterent and a key mark identifiable by the general public. In some jurisdictions, it can also serve as an automatic warrant. Do-it-Yourself microchips and freeze branders can be purchased from NetPosse.com. All proceeds benefit this nonprofit organization. Visit the NetPosse store to purchase products.
More on Permanent Identification can be found here: http://www.netposse.com/article.asp?id=71
Please read NetPosse's Disclaimer below regarding horse slaughter. While there are no solid statistics on how many horses were stolen from slaughter before or after the plants closed stateside in 2007, we do know that stolen horses can wind up at slaughter. We want to help prevent that and help recover horses before it is too late.
Here are a couple of stories on horses destined for slaughter that NetPosse was able to help:

"Horse slaughter plants have become legal again, after Congress quietly unbridled restrictions on processing horse meat. President Barack Obama signed the enabling bill on Nov. 18.
Entities already are considering opening plants in Oregon, and possibly Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Georgia and Missouri, slaughter plant proponent Sue Wallis said.
Between 120,000 to 200,000 horses will be killed for human consumption per year, she estimates."
