The Idaho Miracle: NetPosse’s First Internet Alert
Debi and Harold Metcalfe issued the first stolen horse alert on the internet in September 1997. Their mare, named Idaho, was stolen from their farm in Shelby, North Carolina. They used early internet communication and digital flyers to spread what became known as the "Idaho Alert" (later renamed NetPosse Alert), which led to Idaho's recovery 51 weeks later and inspired the creation of Stolen Horse International (also known as NetPosse).

The Recovery & A Promise Kept
Reflecting on the divine intervention that brought Idaho home, Debi shared this heartfelt memory:
"Every single night, I prayed for Idaho's safe return. I made a solemn promise to God: if He would just bring my sweet girl back to me, I would help other desperate families bring their missing horses home, too. I think I got more than I bargained for with that promise. Well, by His grace, here we are 29 years later—still keeping that sacred promise. But we can't do it alone anymore. I need your support today to ensure we can make it to 30 years of bringing them home." - Debi Metcalfe
Idaho lived out the rest of her long life with the Metcalfes in North Carolina, passing away after a bout with cancer at the age of 32 in August 2016.
The Lasting Legacy of Stolen Horse International
What began as a desperate, one-woman search on early internet message boards fundamentally changed equine security forever. Over the last 29 years, Stolen Horse International has grown from a single email blast into a global pioneering network, creating the first-ever "Amber Alert" system for horses. By establishing massive volunteer search networks, spearheading national microchipping education, and monitoring horse auctions, NetPosse has directly aided in the recovery of thousands of missing, lost, and stolen horses. Today, it remains the ultimate shield for the equestrian community, proving that the determination of one person can build a network that protects thousands.
In other words, every single equine alert system and recovery network in existence today is simply tracing the footsteps of NetPosse. While others have built social groups that replicate these methods, the entire foundation of modern equine recovery rests on NetPosse pioneering the original blueprint at ground zero, out of the heartbreak of Idaho's theft.
