Reward Increased to $23,000 for Information on 21 Dead Horses

25 February 2020

The reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person(s) responsible for killing 21 horses in Floyd County, Kentucky has been increased to $23,000. The horses were found shot to death at an abandoned strip mine in December 2019. While several of the deceased horses were pregnant mares, five of them were owned by the family who discovered the carnage while searching for their missing horses.

Floyd County Sheriff’s Detective Kevin Shephard, the lead detective on the case, confirmed the increased reward. Tips have poured in and a few persons of interest have emerged. The department is currently awaiting results from crime scene evidence being processed at the crime lab. Detective Shephard feels that the department is getting close to resolving the case. No arrests have been made.

The person(s) responsible are currently looking at being charged with 21 charges of cruelty to animals, which are misdemeanor charges, and one criminal mischief first charge, which is a felony. Anyone with information is urged to call law enforcement.
