Three horses load down with with marijuana have been seized - along with the dope - by US federal border authorities in Arizona.

The US Border Patrol found the three horses with nearly 1000 pounds of marijuana last week near Nogales.

The horses are now in the custody of the Arizona Department of Agriculture, and will be auctioned if not claimed.

No smugglers were found with the horses, whose load had a street value estimated at $500,000.

Smugglers from Mexico use horses from time to time in their drug trafficking. They are often abandoned in the desert once they have done their work and left to fend for themselves.
