Tack Theft Tips From You
Defining characteristics
- These
type tack thefts have occurred in the past in and around
Guilford
County
. Significantly, they follow the same pattern as the more
common jewelry and silver thefts that occur in the affluent parts
of
Greensboro
.
The
defining characteristics are:
- there will be several similar thefts in the same area in
a short amount of time
- the thieves are very knowledgeable; they take only the
best, high-quality items (estate jewelry, high-quality silver,
Stuebben dressage saddles, etc)
- home thefts occur during the day, often when residents
are in the yard; tack thefts occur at night
- suspects are rarely seen, but when they are, they are
described as dark-olive skin Caucasians ("gypsies"),
often traveling in family groups, sometimes in older station
wagons
- the property is not resold locally -- after a few thefts
the group will disappear from the area
- the next round of thefts will be a state or two away
- the thieves will return every few years and start the
cycle over.
My
personal theory is that the thieves travel a large
"circuit", stealing in one area, fencing the items far
enough away to avoid suspicion, then moving to the next
"target" area. Their circuit is large enough that
by the time they return to your area, previous victims have had
time to "re-stock"
Inter-agency
cooperation over a wide area is the only hope of recovering the
property

Pawn Shops - When all of my tack was stolen I was told
my an officer who is a friend to check around to all the pawn
shops that thieves who don't know tack and are just trying to get
cash will pawn stuff there....just an FYI for whomever is involved Heather
- Charlotte, NC
EBay - Debi, I would also check EBay in the
following months, all kinds of stuff ends up there.

Hi Debi-
Great listing of things to keep your eyes out for. I would add to make sure that all feed & tack storage
areas are securely locked when you are not physically present in the barn. The
thieves want quick, easy
access. Would also suggest nameplates on all tack.
It is very true that the thieves will come back through to see what you have restocked with! Two
months after my friend's barn was robbed, they returned...he had since installed an alarm, & the
thieves ran away. They have since returned to my property also. I now keep everything of major value
in the house, so they left disappointed (poor things).
Thanks again for what you do, Debi. It makes such a tremendous difference to know that you are out here
with us "fighting the good fight".
Hugs, Cristi
