The Story of Sizzle's Recovery ...

"As I continued to watch the horses pass us, I got a closer look at the horse that I thought looked like Sizzle. She passed me with her left flank facing me, and that is when I saw her "Z" brand. Hi Debi,
Yes, this is awesome! Yesterday was my birthday, when Desire called me to tell me she thought she saw Sizzle in the parade, it was the best birthday present!!!

I picked Sizzle up today and took her to her summer home. She looks great. I really felt sorry for the family that thought they bought a nice family horse.

They were told she was a 10-year-old appaloosa mare! WOW. The 14-year-old girl was in love with Sizzle (Spice they called her). I hope to lease Sizzle to them next summer. They took very good care of her.

Again, thanks for your help and perspective that it would take time. I never gave up hope, you were right!

I will send you pictures.

Thanks,
Donna

Dear Debi,

It was a wonderful day for our Fourth of July Parade (in Streator, IL). My family and I went to find good seats early. We were sitting about two blocks from were the parade started from. We were there to see my sister and some others from the farm where we board, ride through the parade. There were four or five separate groups of horseback riders in the parade, and as I was looking for my sisters group, I saw the face of a red roan horse and the thought crossed my mind that it looked a lot like Sizzle, though at that point she was still a block away.

As I continued to watch the horses pass us, I got a closer look at the horse that I thought looked like Sizzle. She passed me with her left flank facing me, and that is when I saw her "Z" brand. My heart leapt into my throat, and I told my family that I thought it was the stolen horse from Black Hawk.

I immediately pulled out my phone and called Donna Irvin.

After I told her what I had just seen she says, "You gotta be KIDDING ME!" She told me to call the police and get them involved so that all of the necessary procedures could be taken care of. By that time the end of the parade had passed. So I called the Streator Police Station and the woman that was dispatching said that she had no idea what I was talking about when I told her about the stolen horse.

I tried to explain but she just said that I would have to find an officer on the scene, that there were ten or more officers between the parade and the carnival. So my fiancé drove my cousin and me to where the parade was to end so that I could talk to the officer that was directing traffic.

Once I had told him what I had seen and tried to explain what was happening, he also turned me away and told me to find one of the officers in the carnival. So my cousin and I began to run through the park looking for another officer when I spotted a squad car driving at the back of the parade. I then ran out into the street and leaned in the front window of the squad car. I started to explain what was going on and the officer tried to say that he didn't know anything about a stolen horse, but I cut him off and said, "I know you don't know what I am talking about but you are the third person I have talked to, and I don't know who else will help me."

So from there he had me sit in the back seat of the car, (which by the way was the first and hopefully only time I will have been in the back seat of a Police Vehicle!) As I sat in the back of the squad car I explained everything that I could to Officer Sass. We met up with the people who had Sizzle at their trailer and Officer Sass explained to them what was going on, and they let me go over to Sizzle and look at her and pet her.

As soon as I went over to her and looked her in the face, she put her head out to me, and that's when I was completely sure that this horse was Sizzle. After Officer Sass had talked to Donna and then Officer Shawn Cisna of the Black Hawk Police Department took down everyone's contact information, and the place where Sizzle was being kept and let them take her home until we knew what was going to happen.

After I left their trailer, I took my three-year-old son to the carnival and within a couple of hours, Officer Sass had called me back to request that I come up to the Police Station and meet with Officer Cisna. Officer Cisna had brought all of Sizzle pictures and identifying information with him and wanted me to go along with him to identify her again. So we drove out to the farm where they boarded her and met with the people and even when Officer Cisna walked up to Sizzle, he knew it was her. So then Officer Cisna arranged with Donna when she would be picked up and that was that.

Sincerely, Desirae Haar
