Why do we need horse ID? - Is it important to
identify your horse? If you had to prove a horse at
the sale barn was yours could you? What if the horse
had registration papers for a horse with the same markings
as yours? Without specific identification
information about your horse, is is difficult for helpful
search volunteers or law enforcement to remove your
horse from the person with possession. Be
prepared to supply positive ID if needed.
Horse
Identification Information - Is a
visible marking a better theft deterrent? There are
many ways to identify your horse. Which way is best
for you and your horse? Choose from freeze
branding, hot brands, microchips,
lip tattoos, hoof
branding, freeze marking,
blood typing or DNA typing. You should also use
natural markings; signalment, tricholglyphs and chestnut
scanning. National ID Plan - The National Animal Identification System (NAIS) is a national program intended to identify specific animals in the United States and record their movement over their lifespans. It is being developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and State agencies—in cooperation with industry—to enable 48-hour traceback of the movements of any diseased or exposed animal. This will help to ensure rapid disease containment and maximum protection of America's animals.

California
Fires and need for identification: Letter from Suzi
Hi Debi,
I saw a web page that listed the horses that were still
missing from the California fires. There were so many
people trying to help get the horses out and as the fires would
go a different direction they were moved several times.
Unfortunately some unseasoned people "helped" to move
some and they have never been seen since. My daughter just
got one that had been through the fires and was being sold at an
auction. A lady bought as many as she could to rescue them
and has been trying to find their owners. Since they
weren't able to find the owners she is letting them go as
rescues. I saw the site a month or so ago and it
broke my heart knowing that some people took advantage of the
situation. I know there are people out there like that but
I always try and find the good in people I guess. You do
such a wonderful job with your alerts I was sure it was your
site I had seen it. Suzi
