Freeze Brand Examples - Protect Your Horses With A Brand

Choosing a brand is the first step in protecting your horses. Select a brand that is unique and easily recognized.

The more simple the brand, the less likelihood of it's blotching and being unattractive and difficult  to read.   What should  you consider when picking your brand?
  • Select a brand as simple as possible.

  • There are so many two character brands that you may need to consider using three letters.  Check with your state registry to see what has been used already.  The older single and two figures brands are often sold with ranches and may need the original owners.

  • When selecting the characters,  avoid "closed" characters since they are more likely  to create imperfect results on your horse.  The smaller the closed space, the more chance of a mistake, or blotching.

  • The letter U is an open character. So is the character "_" or bar, "/" or slash are open characters.

  • The letters A and B and the number 6 and 8 are examples of closed characters.

Don't forget to check with your state's brand inspector's office when  selecting a brand to make sure you brand is compliant with  current brand laws and not a duplicate of another's brand.  Be sure to record your brand in your state's brand inspection office.  Unrecorded brands offer a small amount of protection and add uncertainty. We  hope this helps you make you decision to brand, or not to brand.  To do it yourself, or hire a professional.

Happy Branding!

Debi and Harold Metcalfe

We suggest that a professional do your freeze branding, especially if you know nothing about the process.  This is not our only means of identification.  It was our first.  In 1998, after recovering Idaho we branded all of our horses.  There was no one to help us in our area.  We did it ourselves.

If you want to do it yourself,  maybe these pictures of our results will help.  We read the material, watched a video, assembled our tools and went to work.  Were our results perfect? No, they were not. At least not by the standard perception of freeze brands.  Were we happy with the outcome?  Yes, we were.  Why? Our horses now have very unique brands.  They are all visibly identifiable too.

This is a freeze brand that did not take completely the first time.  We did it the second time and it now looks more like a hot brand.  There is a bald section with white and tan hair.  We personally like having bald areas inside of the brand.  There is no other brand in the world like this one.

This picture shows a near perfect freeze brand which we did ourselves.  Even professionals can miscalculate time and horses can move, yielding brands are not perfect by some viewpoints.  Some people  consider any brand that is unique, registered and is 'one of a kind'  perfect.  Think about it?

This is a freeze brand on a white/gray horse.
The brand is held on longer so the result looks like one from a hot brand.

The Perfect Freeze Brand! (For most people)
Others like the freeze brand that does not have hair.  White hair or no hair, it is your choice.  The freeze brand process can yield both.
