Check Those Checks! BEFORE You Accept Them

Check Those Checks! BEFORE You Accept Them

16 September 2013

jason miller.jpgAnother case of "be careful of who you sell a horse to", In this one, a mare was sold at auction for $4,500 to Jason Todd Miller. He promptly wrote a personal check for the amount. Sounds great, right?

Not so fast. It seems that the bank account that the check was written on was real, but had been closed out. Harvard Sales Management, to whom the money was owed, did not feel friendly towards Miller. They did the right thing-they called him and asked that he make the check good immediately. Miller promised that he would-but then, he didn't. This happened several times as the company contacted him by phone and email and he responded with promises to pay each time.

The original sale took place in March 2012. By April 9, 2012, a criminal investigator was brought in by the Texas & Southwestern Cattlemen's Association. At this point, an affidavit filed in court stated that Miller cut off the affiant's statements saying that he had been attempting to arrange payment. A deadline of April 13 was set.

He once again failed to make payment. At this point, 10 day demand letters were sent out by registered mail. When these were returned unopened and unsigned, an arrest warrant was issued.

Miller is being held in the Angelina County Jail on third degree felony charge of theft of livestock (<10 head and/or $10,000) and state jail felony charge of credit/debit card abuse. As of 09/13/2013, no bail had been set.

REMINDER TO READERS: It pays to verify funds before accepting personal checks or cashier's checks. Also, money orders CAN BE FRAUDULENT. Just like cash money, they can be made to look like the real thing. Be careful. Crooks are everywhere.
