Don't Forget The Batteries!!

14 December 2014

Every child has gotten the new toy that needed batteries - and the adults in charge forgot the proper size. What a colossal downer for Christmas Day......

"Remember the batteries!" is something that every adult learns fairly early on. That look of disappointment is just more than any person can stand - and it is YOUR fault. Doesn't matter how fast you can get to the store. You failed.

But there are other battery disappointments going around these days. These are the disappointments that happen when somebody goes out to start up a tractor, ATV, combine - and the key turns but you get - deafening silence.

Now what? So you climb down and look under the hood - and what do you find? Nothing. Because some nefarious soundrel has absconded with your batteries.

Yep - they took the batteries.

Yes - we know - we usually have stories about people stealing horses, other livestock, horse trailers, equipment, or saddles. But BATTERIES? Isn't this a little weird?

Not when you think about it.

The money isn't wonderful, but it is there. The recyclers will pay $3-5/battery, no questions asked. You are highly unlikely to be prosecuted. Even if you are, the charge is most likely going to be a misdemeanor.

It's just not funny to those people who find they have been hit by the theft. The replacement of these batteries is not cheap - often running well over $125/each.

Law enforcement is recommending that some sort of bracket be installed that will require something like a socket wrench in order to remove it to get to the battery. An alternative would be to weld on metal plates and physically lock the engine compartment.

Another suggestion is to apply owner supplied numbers or some other ID that is permanent to the battery case itself. Make it obvious that the case is marked.

If you really want to go all in, make an inventory list of all equipment, ID numbers, date of installation, etc. Be sure to keep a minimum of three copies - one easily available, one stored elsewhere, and one stored in the cloud. That way, if something happens (like a fire or theft) you'll always have a copy.
