PREFACE to SHI / NetPosse Consent and Commitment Agreement

A letter from SHI president, Debi Metcalfe

Dear Volunteer:

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my personal “Thank You” for your willingness to do more volunteer work for Stolen Horse International, Inc. (SHI).

Your offer to help SHI is appreciated more than you know, but I needed to stress that it does involve dedication – some days more than others. We have had a number of people offer to take on tasks for SHI and then simply vanish into thin air. This can cause great disruption in our ability to do our job (yes, SHI is a business … it just doesn’t have any paid employees). Whenever an assignment is given to a volunteer, that takes a huge burden off of me so that I can do the administrative and office tasks, along with public promotion of SHI that no one else can do.

The work of all NetPosse members is critical to the operation and success of SHI, but in order for SHI to continue to grow and better support and aid the horse community, we must rely on a handful of volunteers that are willing to step up to the plate and take on important assignments that could require a few or several hours per week of their personal time – often the amount of hours needed is dependent solely upon the number of reports SHI receives on stolen/missing horses, tack and trailers. Other assignments may involve a more level amount of daily/weekly work. We want you to choose what works best for your personality, skills and availability.

I receive emails almost daily of people inquiring about different types of information we would like to provide, informing us that information or links are out of date, and then there is the need to bring awareness to more horse organizations and individuals regarding the services and importance of SHI.

I do ask that if you accept tasks on behalf of SHI that you take this seriously as if you are an employee in a paid position because when a volunteer abandons their SHI assignment, especially with no notice, it leaves me in a quandary.

Again, welcome to my world! I am glad you are here and look forward to getting to know you not only on a personal level, but I know that you will become a wonderful asset to SHI!

With all of that being said, please thoroughly read the following information about the role you are about to take on behalf of SHI/NetPosse and thousands of other horse owners and victims of theft. Once you have read and agreed to these terms, we will gladly review your offer to help and a representative of SHI will be in contact with you soon.

Sincerely,
Debi Metcalfe, president
Stolen Horse International

Now, please read below:

SHI / NetPosse Consent and Commitment Agreement

By accepting Volunteer assignments, I acknowledge and understand the following:

  • This is a strictly volunteer position, and there is no financial compensation;
  • ALL letters/projects created on behalf of SHI need to be approved by Debi Metcalfe and/or Angela Kirby. (This in no way means every email or correspondence ... just the "official" type info);
  • That everything we say and do reflects on SHI whether good or bad;
  • Some of the Information we are told is CONFIDENTIAL or potentially LIBEL, so thought and care needs to be taken when dispersing it publicly – if in doubt, consult Debi and/or Angela before releasing information;
  • All contact information such as emails and addresses are the property of Stolen Horse International and are not to be released or disclosed to third parties
  • SHI/NetPosse needs to be blind copied on ALL correspondence for its records and possible follow up at volunteer@netposse.com
  • When sending out an email to more than one individual and/or organization, it should be blind copied to all recipients. The list of contacts will then need to be sent to volunteer@netposse.com for SHI's records
  • This is not a binding contract and either party can terminate the volunteer status at any time. However, please refer to our commitment request above if you need to quit;
  • Emotions and personal opinions must be kept separate from the volunteer work with SHI – no matter how passionate we are about SHI's work, it IS a BUSINESS ... there is the potential for liability, lawsuits, bad press, financial repercussions, etc.;
  • Also, despite any personal feelings on equine issues such as slaughter, rescue, NAIS, etc., SHI does NOT take a public stance on these in order to continue its mission(s) without discord or deviation. Be sure to keep your public opinions separate from SHI;
  • ALL volunteers recruited for your area or for any other are REQUIRED to fill in the volunteer form as you did so their info will be on record with SHI. No other volunteers will be acknowledged without going through this process.

Ways in which your relationship with SHI can personally benefit you:
  • First of all, you will find that it is very fulfilling to help others, especially when a horse is successfully recovered;
  • You may be invited to participate in SHI fundraisers or to help with the booth at major equine events. At these events, you will meet other SHI volunteers, equine enthusiasts and make great contacts;
  • Many of the opportunities will help build your own personal portfolio perhaps through organizing fundraisers, designing promotional materials or webpages, writing press releases and articles, and the like;
  • Also, if SHI one day finds itself able to hire staff members, our dedicated volunteers will be given first consideration!

I have read and agree to the Consent and Commitment Agreement, and I am offering to help as a volunteer for SHI/NetPosse during my free time. I understand that my consent does not mean that I will automatically begin receiving assignments, but that a SHI representative(s) will review my form to evaluate how I best fit with SHI’s missions and needed volunteer positions.

I further understand that my commitment to SHI can be terminated at any time by myself or SHI in the event my views or availability no longer suit SHI’s objectives. However, I agree to notify Debi Metcalfe or Angela Kirby (a) upfront or at any other time if the task is taking up too much of my time or I need more help; (b) if at any time I am no longer able to continue with my assignment(s) that I will give proper notice to Debi Metcalfe or Angela Kirby to allow time to find another volunteer to take over and (c) if possible, I will help find someone to take my place.

Now that you have learned more about SHI’s expectations and opportunities for volunteers, you will need to consent to the agreement and the statement in order for your offer to be considered. There is a “check box” on the form to acknowledge this.
